Cargo Hold Cleaning Between Cargoes: A Practical Sequence

Hold cleaning is a race against the next loading date. A hold that fails inspection costs far more in delay than the chemicals used to clean it. Most crews follow the same sequence; the chemicals make the difference on residues that seawater alone will not shift.

1. Sweep and remove loose residue

Remove all loose cargo residue, dunnage and debris from tank tops, frames and hopper sides before any washing. Wet residue spread across a hold is harder to clean than dry residue swept out.

2. Wash down with seawater

A high-pressure seawater wash from the top of the hold down removes most of the remaining dust and loose material. Check the bilge wells are clear so wash water drains.

3. Apply a hold cleaner

Residues such as coal, pet coke, fertiliser, sulphur, cement and grain dust leave stains and films that seawater does not remove. Apply a hold cleaning chemical with a foam lance or spray gun, working from the bottom up so the product does not run down over dry areas. Give it the contact time on the data sheet — usually minutes, not seconds — and do not let it dry on hot steel.

4. Rinse with fresh water

Rinse the cleaner off with high-pressure water, top down. A final fresh-water rinse removes chlorides left by the seawater wash, which matters for cargoes such as grain, and for slowing corrosion of the hold coating.

5. Dry, touch up and inspect

Ventilate the hold until dry. Spot-treat rust with a rust remover where the coating is damaged, then walk the hold as the surveyor would: tank top, hopper sides, frames, hatch covers and coamings.

Choosing the cleaner

The right product depends on the previous cargo, the next cargo and the hold coating. Tell us those three, plus the number and size of holds, and we will recommend a product and quantity. Deck and superstructure washing is usually a separate, milder deck cleaner; for oil and chemical tanks see our tank cleaners.

Always follow the vessel's safety management system, the product MSDS and enclosed-space entry procedures. Wear the PPE listed on the MSDS.
